Abstract:
This is a talk given at the CMSDAS-2013, Kolkata, India. The talk is divided mainly into two parts. The first part deals with an introduction to some fundamental aspects of general accelerator physics steered towards the entry level student of accelerator physics or some one who is interested in knowing basic aspects of transverse and longitudinal beam dynamics of circular accelerators. Next, I will explain how the above said aspects are used in the context of the LHC, the highest energy particle accelerator in the world and my involvement from 2010-2013, a critical years of initial commissioning and physics production period – which led to the discovery of the Higgs boson. In this section, I also describe what were the main issues we encountered during the commissioning and how did we fix them. Finally, I outline what is currently going on in the shutdown, what are expectations during the 2015-2017 run and that during HLLHC era.
